About the SMC
The Southern Movement Committee organizes for racial justice and human rights in Tennessee through community-led lawyering, civic engagement, community organizing, and participatory democracy.
We are organizers, artists, educators, youth leaders, and movement lawyers working alongside directly impacted communities to implement progressive, transformative programs that tackle systemic violence, racism, and economic inequality through issue-based campaigns.
As a community organizing and civic engagement organization, we are committed to base building and leadership development to shift power, strengthen democracy, and enable communities to govern themselves.
Our activities include civic engagement events, base building, community outreach, and leadership development to strengthen grassroots power and advance community-driven change in Tennessee.

The Southern Movement Committee (SMC) is seeking a creative, strategic, and mission-aligned Communications Associate to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about racial justice, grassroots organizing, and building narrative power in the South.
The Communications Associate will manage and execute SMC’s communications strategy across platforms by disseminating the organization’s public voice, strengthening engagement with our communities, and supporting cultural and fundraising initiatives. This role involves content creation, digital mobilization, and campaign communications that help deepen our impact and grow our base.
This is a full-time position based in Nashville, Tennessee, with possible monthly travel.

Manage SMC’s social media platforms and day-to-day digital content calendar
Create and repurpose organizational content (graphics, written posts, video clips, short-form edits, and other storytelling media)
Manage and organize all content files and media assets for the organization
Coordinate SMS and email communications to our base and key audiences
Monitor local and national trends in narrative, language, and movement messaging
Track and optimize communications strategies across all platforms
Assist in fundraising communications including donor outreach and campaign messaging
Collaborate across teams to support activations and promotion for SMC events
Test and evolve communication tactics in alignment with campaigns and seasonal priorities
Ensure brand consistency and alignment with SMC’s mission and vision

Passionate about racial justice, narrative change, and community organizing
A strong storyteller who understands how to communicate across multiple media platforms
Skilled in writing for different audiences including members, donors, and press
Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage digital files and systems
A collaborative team player who can also work independently and meet deadlines
Able to adapt communications strategy to different cultural, political, and seasonal moments
Familiar with Southern organizing and movement history and present-day organizing efforts

3+ years experience in communications, media, organizing, or nonprofit settings
Strong experience using CRM systems (such as EveryAction, Action Network, or similar) to manage communications, engagement, and data tracking
Proficiency in social media management, video editing, email marketing, and basic graphic design
Familiarity with tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Davinci, Final Cut or Premiere, Mailchimp, Google Workspace, and SMS tools like Strive or Mobile Commons
Experience with grassroots or movement organizations is highly valued
Strong communication, writing, and editing skills

The Southern Movement Committee is looking for a motivated Administrative Assistant to join our team. The Administrative Assistant will be responsible for coordinating and managing day-to-day operational activities, project support, organizational administration, and scheduling, and coordinating SMC events.
We are looking for someone motivated, who works well on a small team, and is committed to our mission and grassroots organizing in Tennessee. The right person for this team takes initiative, aligns with our values, has great communication skills, and can manage multiple projects with different timelines.

Coordinate logistics for SMC events and meetings
Managing SMC email account, mail, and website messages
Manage compliance with internal, state, and federal policies
Manage, file, and update records as necessary
Track staff PTO and support onboarding/offboarding processes
Manage calendars and schedule
Coordinate SMC travel and travel reimbursements
Support with coordinating annual budget process, support with monthly expense and finance reports
Submit bank statements, expense, and income information to the accountant and act as the liaison between Executive Director and the accountant
Ensure timely vendor payment, approvals, invoices, and proper documentation
Calendar and monitor project and program deadlines and schedule
Provide support for program development
Provide general support to the Executive Director and leadership team
Office management that includes ordering and organizing office supplies and manage office operations

The Southern Movement Committee is looking for a compassionate and motivated Member Support Coordinator to join our team. The Member Support Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating and managing our membership supportive services, development, and retention. This role will support members as they navigate supportive services needs. Additionally, the Member Support Coordinator will act as a liaison between SMC, schools, and other community programs.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about community services, grassroots organizing, and collective care. The right person for this team takes initiative, aligns with our values, and understands our commitment to addressing the material needs of our community while organizing for systems change.

Coordinate support for members by connecting them to appropriate resources (housing, legal aid, health care services, etc)
Maintain updated knowledge of local and statewide social services, mutual aid networks, and emergency assistance programs
Build and maintain strong relationships with partner organizations and service providers
Develop and manage member management system
Collaborate with organizing team to identify systemic patterns and advocate for solutions based on lived experiences
Train and support volunteers to assist with outreach and follow-up where appropriate
Participate in organizational meetings, events, and trainings as needed
Coordinate and build relationships with members and youth assembly parents
Coordinate and communicate monthly emails to SMC members
Act as student support liaison for youth assembly members
